205Before regulations came into play, most newborn babies were brought home from the hospital in a bassinet on the back seat, in a box with a blanket, or held by the one person in the car not smoking. Then, in 1984 %u2013 the same year Kenny Loggins hit the top of the charts with%u00a0%u2018Footloose%u2019 %u2013 a South Australian%u2013based company called Safe-n-Sound, released their baby capsule, and everything changed forever.Designed by Melbourne designers Robert Pataki and Phillip Slattery, and based on the company%u2019s original design, the capsule consisted of two parts %u2013 the base and the removable bassinet. This was a game changer. The base remained securely attached to the car seat while the bassinet could be easily removed, so mum and bub could pop in from the car for a quick visit with nan and enjoy a cuddle, a Kingston biscuit and a cup of tea with little fuss.YEAR 1984DESIGNERS Robert Pataki and Phillip SlatteryMANUFACTURER Safe-n-SoundDespite the huge 1980s vibes, this innovative product was a far cry from the %u2018good old days%u2019 when babies were casually placed in the back of a Holden and everyone hoped for the best.From a safety point of view, in the event of a%u00a0 collision, an accident-sensitive latch in the base would disengage, allowing the bassinet to rotate, bringing it into contact with an energyabsorbing bubble in the base and protecting the baby from impact.Advertising from the time featured mums with perms and made bold claims about the bassinet lining (a non-acrylic material called Kodosoft) not harbouring bacteria. Despite the huge 1980s vibes, this innovative product was a far cry from the %u2018good old days%u2019 when babies were casually placed in the back of a Holden and everyone hoped for the best.Since 1984, millions of babies have been brought home in the Safe-n-Sound, helping ease new-parent anxiety. Updated versions are still in production today.
