219The Lockheed Lounge shot to international fame in 1992 when it made a cameo in the video for Madonna%u2019s song %u2018Rain%u2019.The Lockheed Lounge isn%u2019t a piece of furniture you%u2019d find in the average Australian home. In fact, I can categorically state that nobody has ever kicked back on one of these design classics with a packet of Doritos to watch%u00a0Married at First Sight.Marc Newson sees himself as an international designer rather than an Australian one, but undoubtably his design aesthetic was influenced by his environment growing up, particularly the architect-designed project homes of the Pettit+Sevitt company (see page 36), where his mum worked when he was a child. Over the years, his London-based design firm has created toasters, bunk beds, watches, bikes, a concept car and even a jet. He has also worked for Qantas, designing their Skybed business class seats and creating some dinnerware for them %u2013 some of the most nicked plates going around.But it%u2019s the Lockheed Lounge, an aluminium and fibreglass chaise longue, that is his most heralded design. Newson displayed an early version of the seat, the LC1, at his first exhibition, Seating for Six, at Sydney%u2019s Roslyn Oxley Gallery in 1986. For two more years, he made refinements. The final design sees thin plates of riveted aluminium, with rivets beside each seam.
